Walpurga Hausmännin, (d.1587), was an Austrian midwife executed for witchcraft, vampirism and child murderer. The confession she made under torture exemplifies the classical relationship between witch and devil later commonly used in several witch trials.

She confessed to having murdered forty children during her work as a midwife before they were baptized, by the method of applying a special salve or of putting pressure on their foreheads, and to having sucked their blood like a vampire. She had killed children and animals with an oil. She had eaten the children with other witches and used their hair for sorcery.

Elizabeth Báthory


Countess Elizabeth Báthory (Báthory Erzsébet in Hungarian, Alžbeta Bátoriová in Slovak, 7 August 1560 – 21 August 1614) was a countess from the renowned Báthory family. She is possibly the most prolific female serial killer in history and is remembered as the "Blood Countess" and as the "Bloody Lady of Čachtice", after the castle near Trencsén (today Trenčín) in the Kingdom of Hungary (today's Slovakia), where she spent most of her adult life.

After her husband's death, she and four collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of girls and young women, with one witness attributing to them over 600 victims, though the number for which she was convicted was 80. In 1610, she was imprisoned in the Csejte Castle, where she remained bricked in a set of rooms until her death four years later.

Belle Gunness

Belle Sorenson Gunness (born as Brynhild Paulsdatter Størseth, November 11, 1859, Selbu, Norway; died April 28, 1908?, La Porte, Indiana) was a Norwegian-American serial killer.
Standing five feet and eight inches (173 cm) tall and weighing over 200 pounds (91 kg), she was a physically strong woman. She killed most of her suitors and boyfriends, and her two daughters, Myrtle and Lucy. She may also have killed both of her husbands and all of her children, on different occasions. Her apparent motives involved collecting life insurance benefits. Reports estimate that she killed more than 40 people over several decades.

Caroline Grills

Caroline Grills, born Caroline Mickelson (1890 – October 1960), was an Australian multiple murderer.

Grills became a suspect in 1947 after the deaths of three family members: her 87-year-old stepmother Christine Mickelson; relatives by marriage Angelina Thomas and John Lundberg; and close family friend Mary Anne Mickelson. Authorities tested tea she had given to two additional family members (Christine Downey and John Downey) on April 13, 1953, and detected the poison thallium.

Darya Saltykova

Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova (Russian: Дарья Николаевна Салтыкова; née Ivanova, commonly known as Saltychikha) (1730 - 1801) was a Russian serial killer and noble.

Saltykova was a young noblewoman from Moscow who became notorious for torturing and killing over 100 of her serfs, mostly women and girls.

Anna Maria Zwanziger

Anna Margaretha Zwanziger (7 August 1760 – 17 September 1811) was a Bavarian serial killer. She used arsenic, which she referred to as "her truest friend". Zwanziger was employed as a housekeeper and would poison her employers (often judges) with arsenic and then nurse them back to health to gain their favour. Before she was beheaded, she said it was probably a good thing she was to be executed, as she did not think she would be able to stop.[citation needed] She killed four people, one of whom was a baby.[citation needed] Four others survived

Amelia Elizabeth Dyer (1829 – June 10, 1896) achieved notoriety as probably the most prolific baby-farm murderer of Victorian England. She was tried and hanged for one murder, but there is little doubt she was responsible for many more similar deaths over a period of perhaps twenty years.

Delfina and María de Jesús González (known as "Las Poquianchis") were two sisters from the Mexican city of Guanajuato, located some 200 miles north of Mexico City. The sisters ran Rancho El Ángel, called the "bordello from hell". The police picked up a woman named Josefina Gutiérrez, a procuress, on suspicion of kidnapping young girls in the Guanajuato area, and during questioning, she implicated the two sisters. Police officers searched the sisters' property and found the bodies of eleven males, eighty women and several fetuses, a total of over 91.

Kathleen Folbigg

Kathleen Megan Folbigg (née Donovan) (born 14 June 1967) is an Australian child killer. Folbigg was convicted of murdering her three infant children, eight-month-old Patrick Allen, 10-month-old Sarah Kathleen and 19-month-old Laura Elizabeth. Folbigg was also convicted of the manslaughter of a fourth child, Caleb Gibson, aged 19 days. Her killing spree lasted from 1991 until 1999, coming to an end only when her husband discovered her personal diary, which detailed the killings.

David John Birnie (16 February 1951 – 7 October 2005) and Catherine Margaret Birnie (born 23 May 1951) were an Australian couple who were serial killers. They murdered four women ranging in age from 15 to 35 in their home in the 1980s, and attempted to murder a fifth. Maria Swanenburg

Maria Catherina Swanenburg (Leiden 9 September 1839 - Gorinchem 11 April 1915) was a Dutch serial murderer.

She poisoned twenty-seven people with arsenic between 1880 and 1883, but failed in her attempt to kill at least another fifty using the same method — the investigation included ninety deaths.

Miyuki Ishikawa (Ishikawa Miyuki?, 1897 - ?) was a Japanese midwife and serial killer who is believed to have murdered many infants with the aid of several accomplices throughout the 1940s. It is estimated that her victims numbered between 85 to 169, however the general estimate is 103. When she was finally apprehended, the sentence she received was remarkably light[citation needed] considering that Miyuki's actions resulted in a death toll so high that it remains unrivaled by any other serial killer in Japan. According to a report of "Children's Rainbow Center", a writer referred the incident as "unbelievable and unbearable."

Gwendolyn Graham (born August 6, 1963) and Cathy Wood (born 1962) are American serial killers who killed five elderly women in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the 1980s. They committed their crimes in the Alpine Manor nursing home, where they both worked as nurse's aides.

Aileen Carol Wuornos (February 29, 1956 – October 9, 2002) was an American serial killer who killed seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990, claiming they raped or attempted to rape her while she was working as a prostitute. Bloody Benders (the whole family, but note the real attraction was their Daughter Kate, thou they worked as a team)

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers who owned a small general store and inn in Labette County, Kansas from 1872 to 1873. The inn was a dingy place called the Wayside Inn. The family consisted of John Bender, his wife, son, and daughter Kate. They were apparently German; the older Benders spoke English with some difficulty. Kate was very attractive and outgoing, and thus became a large draw for the Benders' establishment. She proclaimed herself to be a healer and psychic who could cure sickness and contact the dead. In popular lore, Kate is said to have been the driving force behind the Bender family killings.

The Bender family home had a large room that was divided by a curtain. If a guest appeared to be wealthy, they would give him a seat of honor, with his back to the curtain. Kate would distract the guest, while John Bender or his son would come from behind the curtain and strike the guest on the skull with a hammer. The victim's throat was then cut to ensure his death. The body was moved behind the curtain and thrown through a trap door that led down into a cellar. Once in the cellar, the body would be stripped and later buried somewhere on the property, often in the orchard.

Dagmar Overbye

Dagmar Johanne Amalie Overbye (April 23, 1883 – May 6, 1929) was a Danish serial killer. She murdered between 9 and 25 children -- of which one was her own -- during a seven-year period from 1913 to 1920. On March 3, 1921, she was sentenced to death in one of the most talked about trials in Danish history, that changed legislation on childcare. The sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Christine Malèvre

Christine Malèvre (born 1970) is a French serial killer.

A former nurse, she was arrested in 1998 on suspicion of having killed as many as 30 patients. She confessed to some of the murders, but claimed she had done so at the request of the patients, who were all terminally ill. France, however, does not recognize a "right to die", and Malèvre eventually recanted most of her confessions. The families of several of her victims strongly denied that their relatives had expressed any will to die, much less asked Malèvre to kill them.
